My Intercultural Dialogue
May 6, 2008

How loud your volume of voice when you are talking with other? Loud, Medium or Soft? Most of Bataknese usually talking in loud voice while Javanese often talking in soft voice. Because of the voice is so loud, people think Bataknese are rude and easy to angry, and because Javanese always talking in soft voice, people assume that they are weak person.
These wrong assumptions can make misunderstanding and conflicts. Because of that, intercultural dialogue is important. To develop understanding between culture and deeper knowledge about the differences of the culture.
I have an experienced about this…
I’m Bataknese, and most of my office-mate is Javanese.
So, they always hear my conversation on phone although I’ve already tried with soft voice.
After finish conversation phone, they sometimes said to me: "Your voice is too loud, we hear everything"
First time they thought about me that I was rude, but with good communication between me and them, they already known me that I have a kind man
This dialogue is also important between nations in the world. The understanding of the culture could support the development of economics cooperation and the harmony of the world.
Intercultural Dialogue -> Understanding -> World Harmony

‘hepeng’ in Batak language is ‘money’
In English-Indonesia translation, there are jokes, for examples:
Translation to English from Indonesian: “Badan saya tidak enak”:

“My body is not delicious”

Yes, as a melting pot of cultures Indonesia is actually growing up with this intercultural dialogue…I don’t have to be a Batak to understand the meaning of ‘hepeng’…hopefully nobody will misunderstand a Makasarese who is saying “bunuh lampu” (kill the lamp) while he/she is actually meaning “matikan lampu” (turn off the lamp)…he…he…he…

Hey bro!
I think the important thing is the capability of ourselves to understand, not just the dialogue. We can understand other’s culture through books, literatures, radio and tv without dialogue directly to them.
Although there’s a dialogue but we still keep the wrong assumption/negative thinking to others, the understanding will not develop.
So the important thing is in your heart. If you have sincere heart and positive thinking, it will easy to you to understand other’s culture.
